Farmhouse
The site for the home is located in rural Tennessee and is surrounded by pastures and soybean fields. Placed in a grove of trees at the edge of a working field, this 2,500 sf dwelling provides relief from the vastness of the surrounding landscape while framing panoramic views of its context. The positioning of the structure is informed by the views from each room, access to natural light and the desire to minimize the impact on the site. Two linear volumes are stacked at right angles and elevated above the fields to maximize views. The lower volume is comprised of interior and exterior spaces. A raised, elongated deck functions as a yard for the children as well as a space for entertaining. A portion of the deck slopes down to meet the earth heightening the experience of being lifted from the landscape to the house that inhabits it. A material palette consisting of charcoal corrugated metal and stained cement board panels both echoes the agrarian vernacular of the area and expresses the structure’s sculptural form.
