The Courtyard Brewery
A design for a brewery in downtown Memphis that aims to revitalize a neglected portion of south downtown by building on the momentum of the burgeoning restaurant and bar area. The urban goal for the project is for the building to act as an anchor in order to create a strong connection between the brewery and South Main, while encouraging restaurants and businesses to infill the newly developed pedestrian corridor along Butler Avenue. The new portion of the building is conceived as a courtyard typology that sits next to an existing building, which will be used as a warehouse. Instead of the typical inward focus of a courtyard building, the entire northern façade is glass to allow maximum visibility of not only the social events that will occur inside, but also the inner workings of the brewing process. The patchwork of weathered natural materials is reflective of the context of mostly warehouses and industrial buildings.
