Brooks Museum on the Bluff
archimania with Herzog & de Meuron
The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art is the largest and oldest public museum in the state of Tennessee. The Brooks is moving its collection to a new facility in downtown Memphis, on the Public Promenade, overlooking the Mississippi.
The new facility is 112,000 square feet, including expanded permanent and temporary galleries, education-related spaces, as well as a sculpture garden for civic gatherings, events and public performances. Included is a fully integrated public/private parking garage and complex art secured delivery system.
The permanent collection of the Brooks Museum ranges from antiquity to the present day. Highlights include the Samuel H. Kress Collection of Renaissance and Baroque paintings; 18th-century British portraiture; British and American decorative arts; American art by Winslow Homer, Georgia O’Keeffe, Thomas Hart Benton, Romare Bearden, and Marisol, among others; photographs by William Eggleston and Ernest C. Withers, among others; contemporary art; and work by regional artists. For the last 15 years, the museum has devoted 96% of its acquisition funds to building an important collection of African-American art.
archimania is the Architect of Record for the New Brooks project, working with Pritzker prize laureates Herzog & de Meuron as Design Consultant.
archimania is coordinating the 20 plus consultant offices while Herzog & de Meuron create bridging design documents, is leading the effort in coordinating design with the City of Memphis, and will be creating the final Construction Documents for the project. The project has three construction phases and drawing packages, the first issued earlier this year. These phases were developed in conjunction with the Owner and Construction Manager to expedite construction and save construction dollars by procuring portions of the project scope as early as possible.
