Shelby Farms Park - Sustainability Guidelines

Consideration of the environment and climate are at the forefront of building design today. This reality bears greater weight when considering the design of buildings within the largest urban park in America. The architecture of Shelby Farms Park will embrace and accommodate sustainability as a lifestyle. The architecture and its environmental performance will coalesce to the point where it is impossible to discern one from the other. Passive and active systems shall be implemented within the larger framework of the design, working together to relieve loading on the other. Neither the boathouse nor the lake pavilion will support sustainable attachments to the architecture, but rather the integration of sustainable ideals and aspects into the architecture. Looking beyond the buildings themselves and examining issues with a more far-reaching impact, such aspects shall include site sustainability, water conservation, energy conservation, and resource responsibility. More immediate to the buildings are sustainable aspects such as indoor environmental quality and efficient operational procedures. Implementation of these various concepts can take many forms, so long as those forms are fully integrated and reinforce the sustainable ideals of the park.
